Voting with Bystanders
نویسنده
چکیده
Voting protocols ensure the consistency of replicated data objects by disallowing all read and write requests that cannot collect the appropriate quorum of replicas. Voting protocols require a minimum number of three copies to be of any practical use and often disallow a relatively high number of read and write requests. We present here a voting protocol overcoming this limitation and providing a significant amount of faulttolerance with as little as two replicas. Voting with Bystanders (VWB), as this protocol is named, applies to all networks consisting of LAN segments that are immune to partial failures linked by gateways that might fail. A stochastic analysis of the protocol under general Markovian assumptions is presented showing that VWB provides excellent read availabilities and good write availabilities with as little as two or three replicas.

An Available Copy Protocol Tolerating Network Partitions
Maintaining in a consistent state multiple copies of the same data is a complex task, especially when the copies reside on sites that can be separated from each other by network partitions. All existing replication controls that tolerate network partitions use quorums to provide mutual exclusion and prevent inconsistent updates. Unfortunately these protocols require a minimum of n + 2 voting si...

متن کاملA New Voting Model For Groups With Members of Unequal Power and Proficiency
To proposing a voting model for groups with members of unequal power and proficiency, we present some models for rank ordering efficient candidates, by extending the ideas of some authors. Then, we propose a new methodology to rank the ranking models for the performance indices of only DEA efficient candidates based on a classical voting model. Also, an approach for combining the results obtain...
متن کاملPersonal distress and the influence of bystanders on responding to an emergency
Spontaneous helping behavior during an emergency is influenced by the personality of the onlooker and by social situational factors such as the presence of bystanders. Here, we sought to determine the influences of sympathy, an other-oriented response, and personal distress, a self-oriented response, on the effect of bystanders during an emergency. In four experiments, we investigated whether t...
